Dr Butler Post Op Nail

Post-Operative Patient Instructions For Nail Removal

1. The anesthetic will last for 2-8 hours. If pain is present as this wears off, it can be controlled with Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

2. Keep your bandage clean and dry for 24 hours. A spot of blood on the top of the bandage is not uncommon.

3. After 24 hours you may begin your daily soaks. Soak your foot for 15-20 minutes in warm, soapy water. If you shower in the morning, then soak in the evening.

4. After showers and soaks apply a Band-Aid with a light layer of antibiotic ointment. If you notice the skin around the nail bed is white, then too much ointment is being used.

5. The wound will drain for 3-4 weeks. The purpose of the soaks is to prevent a scab from forming. If a scab forms, then the drainage will be blocked. This will cause the toe to become painful, red and swollen. If you notice a scab forming, you can gently clean the area with a cotton swab.

CALL OUR OFFICE IMMEDIATELY IF:

· Severe pain occurs… not reduced with elevation, ice, or pain medication.

· Fever occurs above 100.5 degrees F.

· Your toe gets red, swollen, and appears infected
